ORIGINAL SETTLERS - EARLY PEOPLE
Did You Know that in Pointe Coupée Parish reminders still exist of the original settlers, our indigenous or original people?

Traces of ancient settlements in the parish include ten "Indian" mounds, both burial and temple. In 2003, a family in Livonia generously donated the burial mound to the town of Livonia for educational purposes. Other traces of Indian culture in the parish exist in artifacts. In the St. Francis Chapel, it is believed that converted Tunicans carved the cypress statue and confessional. Existing bayous, rivers and places also pay tribute to our native heritage: Bayou Latenache after the great Indian Chief; Fordoche; and, Atchafalaya which is Choctaw for "long river"; and, Maringouin "swamp mosquito".

Do You Know of any other reminders that still exist in the parish of our original settlers?
