POINTE COUPEE PARUSH HISTORY: OVERVIEW

From the window of their local history, students will travel through the trails of time with each chapter, as they become intimate with the experiences of the past of the place, people, and culture of Pointe Coupée Parish and its influence on and connection to Louisiana, the United States, and global events. Integrating local history into the Louisiana history curriculum will give a personalized approach to studying state, national and world history.

Resources have been developed to easily integrate the history of Pointe Coupée Parish into the Louisiana history curriculum. A documented narrative text, authored by a historian, is written in parts, covering Pointe Coupée Parish history from pre-history to early twentieth century. These parts can be taught together chronologically or separately as units of history. This text, available both in printed Readers and through the online e-book, is enhanced by resources on the Pointe Coupée Parish History website, a free educational resource. A special section of the website, the Virtual Classroom, is dedicated for teachers and students. Included in this section are a variety of resources for both teachers and students as Pointe Coupée Parish history becomes alive.

Using multi-media and engaging features, the students will formulate as historical detectives and authors with their research projects. They will improve both their critical thinking and communication skills as they communicate spontaneously through the website Forum with other students, teachers, and experts. The students will have the opportunity to meet and discuss with experts and leaders in their community through presentations and assemblies. They will have hands-on experiences through field trips. The students will share and express themselves in a variety of mediums—written, artistic, audio, and video—as they define what Pointe Coupée means to them.

From their completed projects, the students will use their discoveries to build a cache of resources on the Pointe Coupée Parish History website. Working together, the students of Pointe Coupée Parish will perpetuate a tradition of learning about and sharing their common thread, their history, with their community.

This resource – text and website with all the built-in features -- surpasses the benchmarks and standards for the Louisiana history curriculum established by the State Department of Education. In addition, this resource addresses the new Louisiana K-12 State Educational Technology standards, with the integration of technology as the core of the program. The course also weaves in state, national, and world history. It is designed to be interactive and engaging to provide the students the best opportunity for learning. Captivating the students’ immediate interest, will seal their ability to retain what they have learned and translate into application well after they have learned about their local history. Each of the diverse aspects of the course will contribute to an interactive, engaging, and fully-coordinated history education.

This resource also addresses the basics of Louisiana Content Standards Foundation Skills in communication, problem-solving, resource access and utilization, and linking and generating knowledge and citizenship. More specifically, the content touches all areas of the Louisiana State Social Studies Standards, including geography: physical and cultural systems; civics: citizenship and government; economics: independence and decision; and history: time, continuity, and change. In addition, the content crosses over into other curriculums and their standards as it enjoins and increases skills for reading, writing, communication, and foreign language development through exposure to French, Spanish, and the Créole dialect.

The built-in features benefit both teachers and students. The text, delivered through an online e-book and supported by a printed reader, is further enhanced with built-in learning features for the students. Within each chapter is a documented narrative with direct reference to footnotes and endnotes, a glossary, suggestions for further research and World Wide Web resources. Easily following the Louisiana State Foundation Skills for learning, this local history resource encourages the students to use higher order thinking skills and associate learning activities with real-world situations.

Using a multimedia approach, this model resource complements the invaluable role of the teacher’s classroom participation, allowing the educator to more effectively guide, facilitate, share, and mentor.
